As the Golden State Warriors launch their 2023-24 season campaign, head coach Steve Kerr finds himself in a familiar but challenging situation: establishing a consistent starting lineup. The Warriors, known for their dynamic and fluid approach to the game, need to address several key positions to optimize both their starting unit and their bench strength.
Uncertainty in the Backcourt
One of the primary uncertainties lies in the shooting guard position, traditionally occupied by Klay Thompson. Despite Thompson’s skill and history with the team, Kerr has not designated a clear successor for the role. As he puts it, "The starting lineup is going to have to be dependent not only on the first five fitting but the second fitting as well. We've got a lot of work to do to figure out lineups. All the guys can do is compete, play their ass off."
The competition is set to be intense, with Brandin Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, and Buddy Hield each vying for the spot. Their performances in training camp will be crucial, as Kerr evaluates how well they integrate with the rest of the unit. "There is competition across the board. It's not as simple as, 'Who is going to be the 2?' It's got to be -- 'Who is going to be the 5? Who's the 4?' We know that Steph is the 1. But what's the combination?"
Establishing the Frontcourt
While Stephen Curry is a lock for the starting point guard, other positions remain in flux. Draymond Green is likely to retain his frontcourt position, but the center spot sees Kevon Looney and Trayce Jackson-Davis in a competitive duel. Additionally, Warriors fans might witness Kyle Anderson stepping in for small-ball center duties, adding another layer of versatility to the squad.
The forward positions are equally competitive, with Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins both making strong cases for starting roles. Their ability to shoot and create opportunities on the floor makes them valuable assets, and coach Kerr seems to take a modern approach, encouraging more three-point shooting. "I want Wigs shooting six, seven 3s. I want Brandin, I want Moses, I want De'Anthony -- I want to be a high volume shooting team,” Kerr emphasizes.
New Beginnings and Challenges
Reflecting on last season, the Warriors had to adapt to an ever-changing roster, utilizing 27 different starting lineups. Despite these challenges, they managed to secure the fourth spot in the league for three-point attempts. This adaptability is something that Kerr sees as an advantage going forward, using the competitive nature of the team to their benefit.
"It's easier when you know your starting five and you know your first four guys off of the bench. Way easier as a coach knowing that. But we don't have that. So let's turn that into a positive and turn it into competition ... let's establish our identity out of that competition," Kerr says optimistically.
Kerr’s approach seems multifaceted, ensuring that there is a strategic blend of veteran presence and youthful energy. Stephen Curry, a staple in the lineup, acknowledges the plethora of options. "You've got a guy who's a connector and can put the ball on the floor, create like BP, and obviously me and BP started a couple times last year. You've got Buddy who can shoot, who spaces the floor, and is a veteran. We've got a lot of options,” Curry notes.
Strategic Evaluation and Future Prospects
This season marks an opportunity for reinvention and growth for the Warriors. As Kerr insightfully comments, "This feels like a new beginning for us, whereas last year felt like an extension of who we already were. It gives us a chance to reinvent ourselves a little bit.” This period of reassessment and strategic evaluation during training camp is critical, ensuring the right players are in the right roles to maximize their collective potential.
The upcoming season promises excitement and maybe a few surprises for Warriors fans. The blend of old and new, the competitive spirit, and the relentless pursuit of excellence are what define the Warriors’ ethos. As training camp continues and the new season inches closer, fans can expect Kerr and his team to leave no stone unturned in their quest to assemble a lineup that not only works on paper but excels on the court.
