Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who delivered an impressive 2023 season, was conspicuously absent from the NFL's Top 100 list, a decision that has left the young star and many others baffled.
An Impressive 2023 Season
Jaylon Johnson had a standout 2023 season, earning second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl bid. His performance on the field was undeniable, recording a career-high four interceptions, including his first pick-six, and forcing one fumble. Johnson's defensive prowess was evident as he held opponents to a mere 50.9 passer rating when targeted, and allowed just a 55% completion rate.
Despite these stellar achievements, Johnson was left out of the NFL's Top 100 list, a selection that seemed even more perplexing given that only two Bears' players made the cut this year: wide receiver Keenan Allen at No. 51 and defensive end Montez Sweat at No. 82.
Johnson's Response to the Snub
Understandably, Johnson did not hold back his disappointment and frustration. "Bull----," he exclaimed. "It's bull----. There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro and not [be] a Top 100 guy. I could've been 101 I guess, but goddamn, [New York Jets quarterback] Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season and he was voted [92nd]."
Johnson's disbelief was echoed in further comments. "I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain't just the media that do it. Players clearly -- if they voted for it -- they made some god damn mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it's alright, I got some more for them." For Johnson, the omission seemed not just an oversight but a significant slight. "It's disrespectful because I go out there, line up and I know receivers go out there and can't say that I'm not one of the best players that they play against."
A Motivating Factor
Rather than letting the snub dampen his spirits, Johnson appears to be using it as fuel for the upcoming season. "So I mean, whatever it is, it happened. Doing it wouldn't have moved me to where I'm complacent, but just to see it -- ain't no way there are 100 guys who are better. Ain't no way. Especially guys who didn't play, who were hurt, played half- ain't no f---ing way. Excuse my language. Ain't no way. Ain't no way," he passionately declared.
Johnson affirmed that the snub would "100%" motivate him as he gears up for another season with the Bears. His unyielding drive and the chip on his shoulder could very well propel him to exceed even his standout 2023 performance.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Johnson's four-year, $76 million contract extension signed in March ensures that he remains a cornerstone of the Bears' defense. With Johnson's skill set and determination, the Bears can be hopeful for notable defensive displays, and it would not be surprising to see Johnson's name appear prominently in future accolades and comparisons.
Given his career trajectory and the clear frustration he feels about his current omission, it seems certain that Jaylon Johnson will use this oversight as motivation to reach new heights in his career. The NFL may have overlooked him this time, but if Johnson continues his upward trajectory, they might find it impossible to ignore him in the future.
