Drue Chrisman, a punter known for his stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, has been on a rollercoaster journey in pursuit of NFL redemption. After spending part of 2022 with the Bengals, Chrisman found himself at a crossroads when he was cut from the team in August 2023. On August 13, he received an invitation to a tryout with the Washington Commanders, an opportunity that he chronicled in a video five days later. This video revealed a candid glimpse into his experience, including a pivotal moment where an assistant coach for the Commanders informed him that the team did not plan to sign him.
However, what followed was a unique twist that underscores the often turbulent nature of professional sports careers. "The Commanders legal team apparently called up Chrisman and asked him to delete it," noted one source. Despite this request, Chrisman chose to keep the video up, standing by his decision to share his journey transparently with fans.
Interestingly, this was not Chrisman's first foray into documenting his tryout experiences. Earlier in the month, he had released a similar video showcasing his tryout with the San Francisco 49ers. Unlike the Commanders, the 49ers did not react to Chrisman's content in the same way, highlighting the varying attitudes teams have towards players' personal content.
Chrisman's career has been marked by notable performances and challenging setbacks. During the 2022 season with the Bengals, he averaged an impressive 42.6 net yards per punt, ranking 10th overall in the league. Despite this achievement, the Bengals decided to release him in August 2023, setting him on his current path of seeking another opportunity.
His journey didn't lead solely through the NFL; in April, Chrisman signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. His time with the Stallions was short-lived, however, as he was released in May after filling in for injured punter Colby Wadman.
