In a significant development for the Washington Commanders, Jason Wright, the first Black president of an NFL team, will transition from his current role following the 2024 season. Wright will then take on a new position as a senior adviser, focusing primarily on ensuring the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.
A Legacy of Transformation
Jason Wright's tenure with the Commanders has been transformative in many ways. He joined the organization in 2020 when the team was still known as the Washington Football Team. Under his leadership, the franchise underwent a significant rebranding in 2022, emerging as the Washington Commanders. During this period, the Commanders also experienced a change in ownership, transitioning from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris.
Wright’s influence extended beyond branding and ownership. His leadership saw the organization reconnect with its fanbase and the community. "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization," Wright remarked, reflecting on his accomplishments.
A Historic Role
Wright's appointment as team president was historic, marking him as the first Black president of an NFL team and only the fourth former player to ascend to such a position. His unique perspective as a former player provided him with insights that have proven invaluable in navigating the complex dynamics of professional football administration.
Despite the challenges, Wright remained committed to driving the Commanders forward. He noted, "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal."
Looking Toward New Horizons
As Wright prepares to step down from his current role, he is also exploring new opportunities. He is a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers, a testament to his growing reputation as a leader in the NFL. Nevertheless, Wright remains focused on his responsibilities with the Commanders for the near future.
"This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," he stated, expressing his gratitude and optimism for the future.
A Bright Future
Wright’s tenure with the Commanders has set the foundation for a promising future under the new ownership of Josh Harris. Wright himself acknowledged the bright prospects ahead, "Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership."
As the Commanders advance toward completing their new stadium deal and building upon their re-engaged fan base and community relationships, Wright's contributions will leave a lasting legacy. His transition to a senior adviser role ensures that his expertise will continue to benefit the team, even as he explores new leadership opportunities within the NFL.
The Washington Commanders stand on the cusp of a new era, buoyed by the transformations achieved under Jason Wright's historic presidency and poised for further success as they move forward.
