Philadelphia Eagles Sign Mekhi Becton: A Versatile Addition to the Offensive Line

The Philadelphia Eagles have added a significant piece to their offensive line, signing Mekhi Becton. Initially brought in to serve as a swing tackle for starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton has already found himself filling a different role due to an unfortunate injury.

Versatile Addition

When Tyler Steen went down with an ankle injury, it opened up the starting right guard position. During Becton's first practice with the first team, he stepped into the role and managed to neutralize Jalen Carter during 11-on-11 drills, showcasing his adaptability and readiness.

"I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," said Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, expressing confidence in Becton's ability to integrate with the first-team offense.

Remaining Ready

Becton did not practice during the initial days of training camp, instead, he used this time on the sidelines to stay engaged and learn from his teammates. Despite the setback, Becton remained focused and prepared. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton shared, highlighting his determination and team spirit.

This period of observation has evidently paid off. According to Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, Becton's versatility and willingness to learn have been instrumental. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?"

Key Asset

Becton's ability to handle multiple roles along the offensive line makes him an invaluable asset. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," Dickerson added, underlining the importance of having such a versatile player.

Even though Becton is currently a part of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, his performance and adaptability could see him making a significant impact at any moment. His mentality reflects a readiness to step up whenever called upon. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton asserted.

With the Eagles yet to disclose the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, Mekhi Becton's role becomes even more critical. If his first-team practice is any indication, Becton is well-prepared to take on additional responsibilities and contribute significantly to the team's success this season. As the season progresses, his versatility and readiness will likely serve the Eagles well, providing much-needed depth and reliability to their offensive line.
