Quinyon Mitchell Shines in Eagles' Training Camp
Philadelphia Eagles rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has quickly emerged as a standout at the team’s training camp, capturing the attention of teammates and coaches alike. Known for his spirited performances and his talent for trash-talking, Mitchell has added a new edge to the Eagles' secondary.
Perhaps the most notable moment of training camp came when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio surprised many by promoting Mitchell to start in the slot position. Despite being relatively new, Mitchell adapted remarkably well, showcasing the versatility the Eagles hoped to tap into when they drafted him.
“I do think when you drafted a corner per se in the first round, he needs to be a corner, and then if he can play inside, that's a bonus. This is a bonus right now that he's been able to play inside. We still really like him as a corner, though, too,” said Fangio. This adaptability has not gone unnoticed, as Mitchell has become the first rookie cornerback to start prior to Week 5 since Eric Allen in 1988.
A New Defensive Dynamo
Mitchell's ability to seamlessly switch between positions has earned him praise not just from the coaching staff but from his fellow players. The young cornerback has taken on spirited one-on-one battles with standout wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, holding his own and raising the competitive level of practices.
DeVonta Smith shared his insights on Mitchell’s demeanor on the field. “I got open, I caught the ball and he told me my route was trash,” Smith recounted with a smile. “I like it, though. He's a great guy. I like what I'm seeing.”
A.J. Brown echoed similar sentiments. “That's me kind of picking a fight with him, trying to get him going. He likes to talk trash at me. But I'm just picking a fight with him to make practices very interesting. But he's not fazed. He's not fazed.”
Elevating Team Swagger
The energy Mitchell brings has contributed to an increased swagger in the Eagles' secondary, which also benefitted from the addition of C.J. Gardner-Johnson this offseason. Veterans like Darius Slay have noticed a difference in the team's vibe, partly attributed to Mitchell’s intensity.
“Oh yeah. I love it. It’s pride and like chill. It’s not loud. He just goes to him and is like, next. Line it back up. It’s smooth. That’s how I do it. I love it,” said Slay, highlighting the rookie’s cool yet competitive approach.
Smith also commented on Mitchell’s flexibility within the defense. “He's moving around a lot—playing inside, going outside. The versatility is there. It's fun going against him,” he noted. This ability to switch roles fluidly adds a dynamic layer to the Eagles' defensive schemes.
Building for the Future
As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for the upcoming NFL season, the buzz around Quinyon Mitchell continues to build. His ability to adapt, compete, and bring a fresh energy to the field has not only earned him respect but has also set high expectations for his rookie season.
“You want some competitors on the other side too,” said Brown, affirming the competitive spirit Mitchell brings to the Eagles. “Q, he's going to be locked in and he's going to talk his talk.”
With the start of the NFL season looming, all eyes will be on Mitchell to see if he can translate his training camp success into regular-season performance. If his early displays are anything to go by, the Eagles may have found a cornerstone for their secondary for years to come.
