Washington Commanders Name Jayden Daniels Week 1 Starting Quarterback

In a decision that could shape the course of the Washington Commanders' season, head coach Dan Quinn has named Jayden Daniels as the team's Week 1 starting quarterback. The announcement, made on Monday, comes after a standout performance by Daniels during the preseason and a stellar collegiate career at LSU.

A Strong Preseason Showing

Daniels, the Commanders' No. 2 overall pick in the draft, has shown exceptional readiness throughout training camp. In the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, he completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards and added 13 yards on the ground. On both of his two drives, Daniels successfully led the team into scoring positions resulting in field goal attempts. Notably, he scored a touchdown on a 3-yard keeper in the preseason opener against the New York Jets.

Coach Dan Quinn was effusive in his praise for the young quarterback, stating, "I'd say he's definitely surpassed even my expectations of readiness, command." This endorsement reinforces the high expectations placed on Daniels as he steps into the starting role.

Impressive Collegiate Performance

Daniels' capabilities were on full display during his time at LSU, where he threw for 3,812 yards and ran for an additional 1,134 yards last season. His performance included a remarkable 50 total touchdowns and a completion rate of over 72%, with only four interceptions. Such statistics underline his consistency and ability to perform under pressure, hallmarks that bode well for his professional career. Daniels also secured the 2024 Heisman Trophy, adding another prestigious accolade to his resume.

Training Camp Battle

Entering training camp, Daniels initially split first-team reps with veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota. However, by the second week, Daniels had begun taking the majority of first-team reps and has maintained this role ever since. His rapid ascension within the training camp hierarchy highlights his preparedness and potential to lead the Commanders’ offense effectively.

For Daniels, the competition has been a motivating factor. "No, I like competing. I'm a competitor, so regardless if I was announced the starter or not, you still got to compete. You still can't be content of your job, comfortable. I think it is just your job to seal the deal. You got to go out there and compete," Daniels remarked.

Commanders’ Quarterback Carousel

The Washington Commanders have had a tumultuous quarterback situation in recent years, with a different Week 1 starter each of the past seven seasons. Last year, Sam Howell took on the starting role, and in 2017, it was Kirk Cousins. This revolving door at the quarterback position has made it difficult for the team to build consistency and cohesion on offense.

Wide receiver Jahan Dotson, one of Daniels’ key targets, has already been vocal about the quarterback's impact. "He's putting the ball in places where it makes our job so much easier, because he is putting it where only you can get it and the defender has no play on it. You truly got to cherish stuff like that and be thankful for it, because not everyone can do that," Dotson shared.

Looking Forward

The Commanders' first test with Daniels under center will be against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 8. This game could provide a glimpse of what to expect from the young quarterback throughout the season. The team, the fans, and the entire league will be watching closely to see if Daniels can bring stability and success to a position that has seen much upheaval for the Commanders in recent years.

With high hopes and strong performances backing him, Jayden Daniels is set to begin a new chapter for the Washington Commanders. If his preseason and collegiate success are any indication, there could be exciting times ahead for the franchise and its supporters.
