The San Jose Sharks’ development camp was abuzz with excitement on Tuesday morning as Macklin Celebrini took to the ice for the first time at Sharks Ice in San Jose. The 18-year-old forward, who is the franchise’s inaugural No. 1 overall draft pick, has quickly become the focal point of discussions surrounding the team’s future.
Celebrini’s decision on whether to join the Sharks for the upcoming season or return to Boston University for his sophomore year is still up in the air. "It's coming up. I'll make the decision pretty quick here," the young star remarked. "Just trying to enjoy this camp, and after that, I guess it's time to make a decision."
A Sterling Freshman Year
The forward’s collegiate performance last season was nothing short of spectacular. Celebrini notched an impressive 32 goals and 32 assists across 38 games as a freshman at Boston University, earning him the Hobey Baker Award. John McCarthy, head coach of the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks' AHL affiliate, highlighted Celebrini’s maturity and skill. "I think he is a mature kid. I know a lot of people [at Boston University], and talking to them about him, as impressive as he is as a player and his skill level, they're equally as impressed as a person. The way that he carries himself, the way that he goes about his business, it's high end, which is why he went first overall," McCarthy stated.
An Impressive Debut
Celebrini’s introduction to the Sharks’ fanbase and organization has been met with enthusiasm. Reflecting on his first days with the team, he commented, "It’s nice to be wanted. It's been good. They were out there supporting today. From everything I've heard, they are some of the best fans in the league. I'm excited to start playing in front of them." He continued, "It's been fun. It's been a long process throughout the draft and stuff, but now it's when the fun begins. You just get to skate, play hockey, and just have fun with the guys."
The young star’s presence isn't just about his individual talent; it’s symbolic of what the Sharks see as a brighter future after ending last season with a dismal 19-54-9 record. "Really good. He was super competitive on pucks. I thought that's what stood out to me the most," McCarthy noted when discussing Celebrini’s on-ice performance at the camp.
A Promising Future
For Celebrini, the choice between launching his NHL career with the Sharks or gaining additional experience at the collegiate level is pivotal. Yet, he remains focused on the present. "We're moving in the right direction. There's so many players getting ready to make their debut, especially with the signings that we've made. It's an exciting time," Celebrini said, emphasizing the optimistic outlook surrounding the team.
The Sharks’ annual prospect scrimmage, set for Thursday, will provide further opportunities to see Celebrini and other young talents in action. This event will likely play a crucial role in shaping the team’s roster decisions heading into the new season.
A Legacy of Excellence
Celebrini's connection to elite sports extends beyond the rink. His father, Rick Celebrini, is the vice president of player health and performance for the Golden State Warriors, underscoring a familial commitment to athletic excellence. Moving to Northern California in 2018, Celebrini’s roots with the local hockey community run deep, having played with the Junior Sharks U-14 team in 2019.
While the decision about where he will play next season looms, the young athlete’s adaptability and competitive spirit remain evident. McCarthy summed it up aptly: "I think he's a really, really talented, really good hockey player. As far as the other stuff, that's kind of above me."
As the San Jose Sharks prepare for the next phase, the fans and the organization alike are eager to see what the future holds for Macklin Celebrini, whether that future begins now in the NHL or continues to develop on the collegiate ice.
